Tips for Hard Totals (Part 2)

In the last post we ended with doubling down on hard totals. The next tip is all about hitting.

1. Know when to hit when you have a hard total. There are actually several instances when this would be a good idea. One would be when you are holding a 9 and the dealer has a 2 or a 7. If you have an 11 and the dealer has an Ace then you should also hit. Another scenario would be if you have an 8 or lower – you should hit then no matter what the dealer is holding. You should also hit if you have a 12 and the dealer has a 2, a 3, or 7 and higher. Last, if you are holding a 13 or a 16 and the dealer has a 7 or higher.

2. How about the opposite? When should you stand when you have a hard total? Most blackjack players stand when they have a 16. It is the safest course for many. Yet through experience I would say that 17 should be your threshold. Why so? If you have a 16 and the dealer has a 7 or above, the chances of him beating your 16 is 80%. That is pretty high and you would most likely lose most of the time. As such, if your hand is anywhere from 13 – 16 and the dealer has something lower than 7, you should most definitely stand. Of course, if you have a 17 and higher then you should stand no matter what the dealer is holding.
