Dealer’s 7 Up Card: Respect

What do you do when the dealer at your blackjack table shows a 7 for his up card? If you are like a lot of other people, you would probably say that you would stand. Most of the time, people get lax when they see the dealer have a 7. The normal way of thinking is that the dealer would probably NOT have a 10 or an Ace in the hole. And if this is the case, the dealer would have to draw. Though this may be true, it does not mean that the dealer would bust if he draws, does it?
But here’s a piece of trivia – a very useful piece of trivia, by the way. Do you know the numbers for how often the dealer busts when he has a 7 up card? Statistics show that the dealer busts only 26% of the time! That is almost only 1 out of 4 times. That means that 74% of the time, the dealer will NOT bust when he holds a 7 up card. And this means that if you do not have a very good hand, your chances of losing are very high.
So what are the mistakes that you have to avoid when you see that the dealer has a 7 up card? There are many and Fred Renzey has a very good list. The one I would like to pinpoint here is splitting two 6’s because I have done this on occasion. Fred Renzey says “This is actually a fairly small mistake against a dealer’s 7, but a mistake nonetheless (unless you’re playing single or double-deck with loose rules). In any shoe game, you’ll come out of the hand cheaper off if you just hit your 12 and be done with it. Playing the 12 once is less costly than playing 6 twice.”
