Florida Continues to Enjoy Blackjack

Not so long ago, the Seminole Hard Rock Casino offered blackjack to the residents of the sunny state.  Located in Hollywood, Florida, this casino brought blackjack to the state banking on an agreement with Governor Charlie Crist.  The agreement was that the Seminole tribe would be allowed to offer table games such as blackjack and baccarat.  However, the Supreme Court voided the agreement, disallowing the Seminole tribe to offer the mentioned games.

Naturally, the people who were elated that the games were being offered got their hopes dashed.  Still, it seems that the Seminoles are in no rush to abide by the ruling.  For a while there, people were wondering as to how the tribe would react to the ruling.  To date, it seems that the legal department of the casino has decided that they are not to stop offering blackjack and baccarat at their establishment.

So why is this happening?  Casino Gambling Web explains:

The chances are strong that once this case goes Federal, that the Seminoles will win the right to offer the game anyway. They are, by law, allowed any games that are legal under state law. Broward County has legalized Vegas style slots for their pari-mutuels.

Vegas style slots fall under Class III gaming. Blackjack and baccarat also fall under that same class. The Seminoles have argued that if Class III gaming is allowed, then they are within their rights to offer the game.

The Seminoles still might not want to go the Federal route. There is a chance they will negotiate a new compact with legislators from the state.

In the meantime, until any negotiations take place, it is business as usual for the Hard Rock. That means blackjack continues, regardless of what the state Supreme Court ruled.

If that is not good news to blackjack lovers in Florida (and the Seminoles of course), then I don’t know what is.
