Tips, strategies and stories about black jack.

History of Casino Blackjack

Blackjack is one of the most popular games in any casino throughout the world. It is also known as “twenty one”, which is a family favourite. Put simply, blackjack is a comparing card game between player and dealer where the player tries to get cards adding up to twenty one without going over that number.

The history of blackjack is a long one, its origins are slightly vague but one of the first written references to it is found within the works of Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes. Cervantes was a notorious gambler so it’s not surprising this game appears in his short stories. There are later references made in both French and other Spanish works.

It is the French who are often credited with inventing the game of Blackjack, in fact it is believed to have developed out of the games called Chemin de Fer and French Ferme, the game twenty one  originated in French casinos as early as 1700 A.D.

Like all good casino games twenty one was introduced to America in the 1800s and spread like wild fire through the casinos, with gambling houses offering bonus pay outs to capture the punters interest and loyalty to the game. One good example of the bonuses offered were a ten to one payout if the player’s hand consisted of the ace of spades and a black jack (either the jack of clubs or the jack of spades). This was called a “blackjack”; and it seems that the name stuck to the game, even though the bonus was quickly withdrawn from the gambling houses.

As with other games of chance in casinos there are variations of the game across the world and it is known by many different names, in Russia it is referred to as Ochko. There are variations of twenty one such as Pontoon, California Aces and Spanish 21. Now with the introduction of the Internet, blackjack can also be played online with the thrill of a live casino through a live dealer whilst you play.
